Simon Magus

Simon Magus
(first century)
   Magician and possible Sect Founder.
Simon appears in Acts. He is described as a sorcerer who claimed to be the Power of God ‘called Great’. He was baptised by Philip in Samaria and he then offered peter and John money in exchange for the power to bestow the Holy Spirit. In consequence, he was sternly rebuked. justin martyr claimed that he was a native of Gitta and was the founder of a Christian Gnostic sect. According to hippolytus, he again came into conflict with Peter in Rome and he is also mentioned in the Pseudo-Clementine literature. Simon has been the inspiration for many later legends, including possibly the Faust story. The sin of simony (selling Christian offices for money) is named after him.
